How Does Scoring Work in American Mahjong?
American Mahjong scoring is tied to the annual card rather than a large table of traditional combinations. Every valid hand has a printed value, giving beginners a clear place to start when someone declares Mahjong.
Quick answer
Begin with the value printed next to the exact completed hand on the current card. The way opponents pay, and whether self-pick or jokerless bonuses apply, depends on the official rules and the table’s agreed scoring method.
Find the correct card line
Match the winner’s tiles to one exact line, including suit colors, flowers, winds, dragons, and concealed or exposed status. The number printed beside that line is the base value.
Do not score a hand from memory when the annual card is available. Patterns and values change, and two visually similar hands can have different requirements.
Agree on money or points first
Some social groups use coins or chips, while others record points or do not keep score at all. Decide the value of a printed unit before the first deal.
Avoid introducing a new bonus after someone wins. Scoring should be predictable for beginners and comfortable for every player.
Keep a simple record
A small score sheet with player names and hand values is enough for most home games. Record immediately, then reset racks and markers before mixing.
If the group uses a bettor or special table rule, add a note at the top of the sheet so the same method is used throughout the session.
Beginner checklist
- Verify one exact card line
- Use its printed value
- Confirm concealed or exposed status
- Apply only agreed bonuses
- Record the result before rebuilding
Compact and travel-table note
For travel nights, keep a small score pad or phone note in the bag. A pouch of lightweight chips is optional; clear records matter more than carrying a heavy scoring set.
Rules note: American Mah Jongg groups may use local table conventions. Use the current official card and rules for tournament or league play, and agree on house rules before the first deal.
Rules authority
The National Mah Jongg League publishes the American version of the rules and the annual Standard Hands and Rules card. Check the current card and official materials when a tournament-level ruling matters.
