Who Goes First in American Mahjong?

Who Goes First in American Mahjong? illustrated beginner table guide

The first player in American Mahjong is called East. East begins with one more tile than everyone else and starts ordinary play by discarding, which is why the first turn can look different from later turns.

Quick answer

East goes first. East starts with 14 tiles and makes the opening discard after the Charleston is complete. The other players begin with 13 tiles and draw before discarding on their turns.

How East is chosen

Casual groups may roll dice, use wind markers, or choose a host as the first East. Any fair method works if the group agrees before the deal.

Seat winds are a table position, not a permanent title. When the deal rotates, a different player can become East.

The opening turn

After the deal and Charleston, East reviews the 14-tile hand and discards one unwanted tile. East does not draw first because the hand already contains the extra tile.

Play then continues to the next player according to the group’s standard direction. Each turn normally follows the same rhythm: draw one, evaluate, then discard one.

When East changes

Many social groups rotate East after each completed hand so everyone has an opportunity to begin. Some groups use longer round structures inherited from other Mahjong traditions.

For a beginner table, simple rotation is easiest: move the East marker to the next player and rebuild. Consistency matters more than an elaborate ceremony.

Beginner checklist

  • Choose East before dealing
  • Give East 14 tiles
  • Give every other player 13 tiles
  • Complete the Charleston
  • East makes the first discard

Compact and travel-table note

Include a small East marker in the accessory pouch of a travel set. It prevents confusion when players change seats or play several short hands in a hotel, club, or cruise setting.

Rules note: American Mah Jongg groups may use local table conventions. Use the current official card and rules for tournament or league play, and agree on house rules before the first deal.

Rules authority

The National Mah Jongg League publishes the American version of the rules and the annual Standard Hands and Rules card. Check the current card and official materials when a tournament-level ruling matters.
