How to Build the Wall in American Mahjong

How to Build the Wall in American Mahjong illustrated beginner table guide

The square wall gives American Mahjong its familiar table shape and keeps all 152 tiles organized for the deal. Once you know the count, building it becomes a fast shared ritual rather than a confusing first step.

Quick answer

Each of four players builds a straight wall containing 19 stacks, with two face-down tiles in every stack. That creates 38 tiles per side and 152 tiles in the complete square.

Count without losing your place

Start by making a row of 19 face-down tiles. Build a matching row, then place the second row on top to make 19 stacks of two.

Beginners often make a wall that looks right but contains 18 or 20 stacks. Count in groups of five, or touch each stack once from left to right before pushing the wall inward.

Form the square

Each player gently moves a completed wall toward the center. The ends may overlap slightly depending on rack length and table size, but the walls should be stable and easy to reach.

Pushers are helpful because they keep sleeves and hands away from loose tiles. On a small table, build close to the rack first and move the wall only after the count is confirmed.

Common wall problems

A slick table can make stacks slide apart, while a thick soft mat can make them lean. Use a flat surface and avoid stacking on a seam or folded section of the mat.

If your set includes extra replacement tiles or blanks that your group does not use, remove them before mixing. Otherwise the walls will not divide evenly into the expected count.

Beginner checklist

  • Remove unused spare tiles
  • Build 19 stacks per player
  • Place two tiles in each stack
  • Confirm 38 tiles on each side
  • Move all four walls inward carefully

Compact and travel-table note

Travel tiles produce a smaller square, which is useful on a card table or apartment dining table. A grippy mat keeps light mini tiles from scattering when the walls are moved.

Rules note: American Mah Jongg groups may use local table conventions. Use the current official card and rules for tournament or league play, and agree on house rules before the first deal.

Rules authority

The National Mah Jongg League publishes the American version of the rules and the annual Standard Hands and Rules card. Check the current card and official materials when a tournament-level ruling matters.
