How Do Year Hands Work in American Mahjong?

How Do Year Hands Work in American Mahjong? visual guide

Year hands turn the four digits of the current year into tile patterns. They look memorable, but they often contain singles and pairs that make natural-tile planning more important than the design first suggests.

Quick answer

Read each year digit as a tile value, with white dragon or soap representing zero. Follow the printed colors for suit relationships and the printed spacing for group boundaries. Jokers can help only in eligible groups of three or more identical tiles.

Translate the digits

A number such as 2 or 6 uses that numbered tile in the suit assigned by the card color. Zero is represented by white dragon rather than a numbered tile.

Repeated digits may be separate singles, a pair, or a larger identical group. The typography and spacing on the card show which interpretation applies.

Protect natural components

Singles and pairs cannot use jokers, so keep natural year digits even when another section looks attractive. Count how many copies of each exact tile are already visible.

Flowers or larger repeated groups may offer flexibility, but they do not fix a missing single zero or a missing pair of exact digits.

Choose suits carefully

Card colors may place the digits in one, two, or three suits. Write the suit assignment mentally before rearranging the rack.

If two candidate year hands use the same natural pair, keep both options until the Charleston shows which surrounding groups are more available.

Beginner checklist

  • Use white dragon for zero
  • Read spacing as group boundaries
  • Map colors to real suits
  • Protect natural singles and pairs
  • Use jokers only in eligible large groups

Compact and travel-table note

A large-print annual card can be more helpful than larger tiles when year spacing is hard to read. Store the card flat in the travel bag so folds do not hide group breaks.

Rules authority

The National Mah Jongg League publishes the American version of the rules and the annual Standard Hands and Rules card. Use the current card and official materials when a tournament-level ruling matters.
