Matching Dragons in American Mahjong Explained

Matching Dragons in American Mahjong Explained visual guide

A matching dragon is not chosen by decoration or personal preference. Each numbered suit has a traditional partner, and the card uses that relationship to keep multi-group hands precise.

Quick answer

Red dragon matches craks, green dragon matches bams, and white dragon or soap matches dots. When a line requires a matching dragon, use the dragon paired with the real suit you assigned to that number group.

The three suit pairs

Craks pair with red dragons, bams pair with green dragons, and dots pair with white dragons. Memorize the three pairs as complete units.

The color printed on the annual card still represents a suit relationship. Translate the card color to a real suit first, then select its matching dragon.

Matching versus opposite dragon

Most beginner references emphasize matching dragons, but some card instructions may specify a different relationship. Read the exact line and any parenthetical note.

Do not replace a required matching dragon with another dragon merely because both tiles share a printed ink color.

Use the rack to verify

Place the number group and dragon group next to each other while planning. The visual pairing makes mistakes easier to spot before an exposure.

Before calling a dragon, confirm that the suit assignment is settled. A premature call can lock the hand into the wrong suit.

Beginner checklist

  • Craks pair with red dragon
  • Bams pair with green dragon
  • Dots pair with white dragon
  • Translate card color to suit first
  • Read special notes on the hand

Compact and travel-table note

Choose mini tiles with distinct dragon artwork. On very small sets, soap and blank replacement tiles can look similar, so separate unused blanks before mixing.

Rules authority

The National Mah Jongg League publishes the American version of the rules and the annual Standard Hands and Rules card. Use the current card and official materials when a tournament-level ruling matters.
