What Do F, D, and 0 Mean on a Mahjong Card?

What Do F, D, and 0 Mean on a Mahjong Card? visual guide

A small group of symbols appears across many sections of the American Mahjong card. Learning F, D, and 0 removes much of the visual mystery before you begin comparing full hands.

Quick answer

F means flower. D means dragon, with the required dragon determined by suit or card context. A printed 0 represents the white dragon, commonly called soap, when the hand uses it as zero.

F means flowers

All eight American Mahjong flower tiles are generally interchangeable. A printed group of F symbols tells you how many flowers the hand requires.

A single or pair of flowers must be natural. A group of three or more may allow jokers under the normal group rules.

D means dragon

Dragon symbols can refer to red, green, or white dragon. When the card shows a matching dragon, the choice follows the suit association: red with craks, green with bams, and white with dots.

Read the card colors and footnotes together. The letter alone does not always tell you which physical dragon completes the line.

0 means white dragon as zero

The white dragon is nicknamed soap and often represents zero in year combinations. The tile remains a white dragon; the zero is its role in that printed hand.

Because year digits are often singles or pairs, do not assume a joker can replace a missing zero.

Beginner checklist

  • Read F as flower
  • Read D as dragon
  • Read 0 as white dragon or soap
  • Check suit and color context
  • Apply joker restrictions by group size

Compact and travel-table note

Confirm that the compact set includes eight flowers, the three dragon families, and clearly recognizable white dragons. Small white tiles can be mistaken for blanks if the artwork is faint.

Rules authority

The National Mah Jongg League publishes the American version of the rules and the annual Standard Hands and Rules card. Use the current card and official materials when a tournament-level ruling matters.
