Any Like Numbers in American Mahjong Explained
Any Like Numbers hands repeat one chosen number across suits or groups. They become much easier to read when you choose the number first and translate each printed color second.
Quick answer
Select one number allowed by the line and use that same number everywhere the pattern calls for like numbers. Different printed colors assign different suits; group sizes and any flower or dragon requirements remain exact.
Choose the number from evidence
Count repeated numbers across all three suits. A pair in one suit and two matching numbers in another may be stronger than a single large group with no required pair.
Keep edge cases in mind: some lines limit the available numbers or combine the like number with a separate fixed pattern.
Assign the suits
Map each printed color to dots, bams, or craks. If the line shows three colors, each suit appears in the position assigned to it.
Matching dragons follow the real suit, not the card ink. Verify the dragon after making the color-to-suit translation.
Know when to pivot
Like-number hands can change to a different chosen number early in the Charleston if another repeated value arrives.
After exposing a group, the number and suit relationship may become fixed. Make the call only when the exact line is clear.
Beginner checklist
- Choose one repeated number
- Use it consistently
- Map every printed color
- Protect exact pairs
- Confirm dragons before calling
Compact and travel-table note
Keep the three suits in separate mini-rack zones. With small tiles, this makes it easier to see whether one number truly repeats across suits.
Rules authority
The National Mah Jongg League publishes the American version of the rules and the annual Standard Hands and Rules card. Use the current card and official materials when a tournament-level ruling matters.
