Can You Call a Flower in American Mahjong?
Flowers are interchangeable in American Mahjong, but that does not make every flower discard callable. The size of the needed group and the exposure status of the hand control the decision.
Quick answer
You may call a discarded flower to complete an eligible exposed flower group of three or more in an open hand. You may also call the final flower needed for Mahjong. You cannot call merely to make a flower pair.
Calling for a flower group
If the card shows a pung, kong, quint, or sextet of flowers and the hand is open, a discarded flower can complete that exposure.
All natural flower and season tiles can serve in the group because they are interchangeable.
Pairs and singles remain natural
One or two flower positions are singles or pairs. They are not ordinary exposure groups and cannot be called early.
The final winning discard is the exception when it completes the entire legal hand.
Check the selected line first
Count the F symbols and read their spacing before calling. Four separated Fs may not represent one kong.
Confirm that the hand is not labeled concealed and that the call does not eliminate a required natural pair.
Beginner checklist
- Count the F symbols
- Confirm one group of three or more
- Verify the hand is open
- Do not call for a pair
- Expose the correct number of tiles
Compact and travel-table note
Use a clear discard area for small decorative flowers. Their artwork varies, so new players should identify all eight before the first hand.
Rules authority
The National Mah Jongg League publishes the American version of the rules and the annual Standard Hands and Rules card. Use the current card and official materials when a tournament-level ruling matters.
