Singles and Pairs Hands in American Mahjong
Singles and Pairs hands can look short and simple on the card, but they demand exact natural tiles. Jokers cannot fill any missing position, so availability matters more than visual progress.
Quick answer
Every required single and pair must be made with natural tiles. Jokers cannot be used. Read each symbol and space carefully, preserve difficult pairs, and count exposed or discarded copies before committing.
Why jokers cannot help
The general joker rule allows substitution only in eligible identical groups of three or more. Singles and pairs never reach that size.
Even several jokers on the rack do not make a Singles and Pairs line easier. Consider a backup hand that can use them.
Protect exact natural tiles
Pairs are usually the hardest parts because both copies must be found naturally. Keep them through the Charleston unless a different hand is clearly stronger.
Track visible copies of every required identity. One discarded copy may be manageable; three visible copies make an unseen pair impossible.
Play without exposures
Singles and Pairs hands are typically concealed and offer few legal reasons to call before Mahjong.
Keep the rack private and use discards defensively. The final winning tile may be called according to the normal concealed-hand rule.
Beginner checklist
- Use only natural tiles
- Protect every pair
- Read spacing carefully
- Count visible copies
- Keep a joker-friendly backup
Compact and travel-table note
Compact racks help organize many small groups if you leave visible gaps. Avoid packing the tiles tightly enough that pairs and singles blur together.
Rules authority
The National Mah Jongg League publishes the American version of the rules and the annual Standard Hands and Rules card. Use the current card and official materials when a tournament-level ruling matters.
