Winds and Dragons Hands in American Mahjong

Winds and Dragons Hands in American Mahjong visual guide

Winds and Dragons hands replace long number patterns with honor tiles, but they are not automatically easier. Exact wind positions and natural pairs often determine whether the hand is realistic.

Quick answer

Read N, E, W, and S as North, East, West, and South wind tiles. Read dragon symbols according to the suit or card instruction. Keep the exact order, group size, color relationship, and concealed status printed on one line.

Read winds as exact identities

Each wind is a different tile identity. A North cannot replace an East simply because both belong to the wind family.

When the card shows NEWS, collect one of each in that order or grouping. Joker eligibility still depends on whether symbols form singles, pairs, or larger identical groups.

Read dragons through suits

Red dragon pairs with craks, green with bams, and white with dots when matching dragons are required.

A printed dragon pair must be natural. A pung or kong of identical dragons may use jokers if the hand allows that group.

Watch visible honor tiles

Honor tiles are easy to track because they cannot hide inside a different number. Count visible winds and dragons before waiting for a rare pair.

If three copies of a required pair tile are already visible, the hand is no longer realistic.

Beginner checklist

  • Keep N, E, W and S distinct
  • Translate dragon requirements
  • Protect natural honor pairs
  • Count visible copies
  • Check concealed status before calling

Compact and travel-table note

Select compact tiles with clear English wind initials or highly legible characters. Ambiguous honor artwork slows beginners more than small numbered suits do.

Rules authority

The National Mah Jongg League publishes the American version of the rules and the annual Standard Hands and Rules card. Use the current card and official materials when a tournament-level ruling matters.
