2468 Hands in American Mahjong Explained
The 2468 section is built around even numbers, but each line uses them differently. Seeing several even tiles is a useful signal, not permission to combine them in any order.
Quick answer
Use the exact even numbers, group sizes, suit relationships, flowers, and dragons printed on one card line. Strong natural pairs usually determine whether a 2468 option is realistic.
Inventory the even tiles
Separate 2s, 4s, 6s, and 8s by suit, then mark pairs and repeated groups. A scattered collection across three suits may support a multi-suit line better than a one-suit line.
Do not discard odd tiles until you review other sections and the Charleston plan. A backup hand may use them.
Check dragons and flowers
Some even-number lines use matching dragons or flower groups. Translate suit colors before choosing the dragon.
Natural pairs remain difficult. A joker can help an eligible larger group but cannot complete a pair of even numbers.
Compare exact gaps
Count missing natural components first, then joker-eligible groups. The hand with the biggest visible cluster is not always the closest hand.
If many needed even tiles appear in other players’ exposures, pivot early rather than waiting for an impossible pair.
Beginner checklist
- Sort 2s, 4s, 6s and 8s
- Mark natural pairs
- Translate suit colors
- Check matching dragons
- Count visible unavailable tiles
Compact and travel-table note
High-contrast number markings matter when several small even tiles sit together. Check mini tile readability before choosing a travel set for card-heavy practice.
Rules authority
The National Mah Jongg League publishes the American version of the rules and the annual Standard Hands and Rules card. Use the current card and official materials when a tournament-level ruling matters.
