Your first American Mahjong game becomes much easier when a few practical decisions are made before you sit down. You do not need to arrive knowing every hand. You do need the right reference, a basic sense of the tiles, and a table that understands you are learning.

Bring the current card

Every player uses the current National Mah Jongg League card throughout the game. Experienced players still consult it constantly. Write your name on yours and bring reading glasses if small print is difficult.

Confirm the kind of table

Ask whether the gathering is a lesson, relaxed social play, or a faster established game. Also ask whether the group uses scoring, table stakes, or house procedures. Knowing the expectation is more useful than pretending to be quicker than you are.

Review five essentials

1. Recognize bams, cracks, dots, winds, dragons, flowers, and jokers.
2. Know that a normal turn is draw, assess, discard.
3. Remember that jokers do not replace singles or pairs.
4. Check whether your intended hand is exposed or concealed.
5. Name every discard clearly.

Choose flexible possibilities

During the Charleston, find two or three hands that share useful tiles. A rack with several even numbers in two suits may support more than one section. Flexibility keeps one unhelpful pass from undoing your entire plan.

Use questions that move the game forward

Instead of “What should I do?” try “Am I reading these two colors as different suits?” or “Can this joker fill that group?” A focused question teaches you a repeatable idea while keeping the decision in your hands.
