A visible joker in another player's exposure may become available when you hold the natural tile it represents. The exchange is simple once you identify the exact grouping, but timing and eligibility still matter.
On your turn, confirm that an exposed joker is substituting in an eligible group, identify the exact natural tile it represents, and exchange that matching tile according to your ruleset. A joker in a concealed hand is not available for exchange.
Read the complete exposure
Do not look only at the joker. Determine the number, suit, wind, dragon, or flower represented by the natural tiles around it. The exchange tile must match that identity exactly.
If the exposure's meaning depends on the card, allow the owner to keep their hand private; the visible natural tiles should still establish what the joker represents.
Confirm the group can use a joker
Under common NMJL-style rules, jokers are used in eligible groups of three or more identical tiles and not in singles or pairs. Current official rules and the printed hand control the final decision.
A joker that is legal in one grouping is not automatically legal elsewhere in the same line.
Make the exchange clearly
