What Should You Pass in the Charleston?
The Charleston is where a starting rack becomes a plan. The best three tiles to pass are not always your three lowest-looking tiles; they are the tiles least useful across your realistic hand options.
Quick answer
Protect natural pairs, useful flowers, jokers, and tiles that serve more than one possible card line. Pass isolated tiles that do not support your strongest sections, while avoiding an early commitment to one exact hand.
First pass: preserve flexibility
Sort the rack by suits, then look for pairs, adjacent repeated numbers, winds, dragons, and flowers. Keep tiles that connect to several lines on the card.
An isolated terminal number may still be valuable in a year hand, so glance at the full card before deciding it has no purpose.
Middle passes: read what arrives
If one suit repeatedly arrives, search the card for lines that can use it. If your protected plan stops receiving support, change direction before the final pass.
Do not assume a passed tile is safe forever. Three other players are also changing plans, and a tile unwanted now can matter later.
Final pass: reduce ambiguity
By the last required pass, try to keep a primary direction and one related backup. Pass tiles that belong to neither.
Keep the rack physically organized by card group, but avoid revealing your plan through exaggerated sorting or comments.
Beginner checklist

- Prefer tiles useful to multiple lines
- Reevaluate after every pass
Compact and travel-table note
Mini tiles can be hard to read while moving quickly. Place the three selected pass tiles in a clear row on the mat and verify them before pushing them across.
Rules note: American Mah Jongg groups may use local table conventions. Use the current official card and rules for tournament or league play, and agree on house rules before the first deal.
Rules authority
The National Mah Jongg League publishes the American version of the rules and the annual Standard Hands and Rules card. Check the current card and official materials when a tournament-level ruling matters.
