Can You Pick Up a Discarded Joker in American Mahjong?
A joker is valuable while it is in a hand or legal exposure, but its status changes after it reaches the discard table. This prevents players from deliberately feeding a wild tile to another hand.
Quick answer
No. Once a joker is discarded, it is dead and cannot be picked up or called. A joker exchange is different: it replaces a joker already displayed in a legal exposure with its matching natural tile.
Discarded means unavailable
Leave the joker face up with the other discards. No player can claim it for an exposure or for Mahjong.
Discarding a joker can be legal, but it permanently removes that joker from active play for the hand.
Exchange is not a pickup
To exchange, place the exact matching natural tile into an exposed group and take the displayed joker into your hand.
The exchange occurs under normal turn rules. It does not use the discard pile.
Why someone discards a joker
A Singles and Pairs hand cannot use jokers, and late defensive situations can leave a joker without a legal place.
Before discarding one, confirm that no eligible backup hand or exchange can use it.
Beginner checklist
- Never call a discarded joker
- Leave it face up in the discard area
- Distinguish exchanges from pickups
- Check backup hands before discarding
- Follow normal exchange timing
Compact and travel-table note
Use a clear center discard area so a small joker is not mistaken for an active loose tile. Distinct artwork is especially important in mini sets.
Rules authority
The National Mah Jongg League publishes the American version of the rules and the annual Standard Hands and Rules card. Use the current card and official materials when a tournament-level ruling matters.
