How to Protect Acrylic Mahjong Tiles in Transit

Acrylic Mahjong tiles are durable in play but can still scratch, chip at an edge, or rub against rack hardware when they move loosely inside a bag. Good transit protection is mostly about stopping movement and separating hard surfaces.

Stop tile-to-tile movement

A fitted tray is ideal because it limits both sliding and impact. If the original trays are loose, add a clean microfiber layer over the top before closing the case. For a temporary solution, group tiles in small zip pouches wrapped with soft cloth rather than one heavy loose bag.

Do not add adhesive directly to tile surfaces. Residue can collect dust and may react differently with printed or painted details.

Separate racks and accessories

Rack corners, pusher hardware, dice, and metal zipper pulls should not rest against tile faces. Give racks a sleeve and place dice in a closed pouch. If the case has one large compartment, use a structured divider so dense tiles cannot shift into the racks.

Carry the current card in a separate rigid sleeve. A bent card is easier to prevent than to flatten during a trip.

Control pressure and temperature

Do not force an overfilled case closed. Constant pressure on a tray edge can transfer to the tiles, and an overloaded zipper can open during handling. Leave enough room for the lid to close naturally.

Avoid leaving acrylic tiles in a hot parked car or prolonged direct sun. Temperature extremes and uneven heating are unnecessary risks, especially when several materials or decorative layers are bonded together.

Handle the case, not the tray

Lift full trays with two hands and place them on a clear surface before opening. When moving between hotel rooms or shared tables, close the main case fully instead of carrying an open tray. The short trip down a hallway is exactly when a loose tile tends to disappear.

If a tile is dropped, inspect the edge and face under good light before returning it to the set. Keep any damaged piece separate until you know it will not scratch neighboring tiles.

Clean gently after travel

Use a soft dry cloth first. If the maker permits damp cleaning, wipe with a barely damp cloth and dry immediately. Avoid soaking, abrasive powders, solvents, and scented household sprays. Store the set only when every component is dry.
